Article Marketing – Not Sexy, But Successful

Article marketing has become one of the most common Internet marketing techniques in the past few years. It has grown exponentially due to the knowledge of its impact on search engine optimization (SEO) and its effectiveness for business and personality branding. But still, its impact is often underestimated or completely overlooked by would-be entrepreneurs.

Article marketing is a very effective method for building your home business and earning money on the Internet.  It has become a necessary tool for doing business on the web, and  is one of many tools you should have in your small business promotion toolbox.

Article marketing is the practice of submitting keyword-focused articles to article directories and sites that then syndicate your content. It helps to promote your business and establish you as an expert in your chosen niche. It also increases the link popularity of your website (by providing valuable one-way links from many sites back to your site), enhances search engine positioning for your chosen keywords and phrases, and it helps you reach more potential customers for your products or services.

The benefits of article marketing include its immense effectiveness as a means of promotion and its small or no cost for implementation. Article marketing is a simple means of allowing your small business to compete with much larger companies. It increases traffic to your website, provides targeted traffic to your website, and generates leads from which visitors may be converted into customers. A single article can be the source of dozens of leads, subscriptions, sales or referrals, which is the reason that article marketing is such an effective promotional tool.

As an important aspect of your overall business marketing plan, article marketing is a smart, inexpensive and simple way to greatly broaden the reach of your online business enterprise, and a powerful tool for your small business arsenal.

Career Planning

Whether you are about to graduate from college, or want to change jobs at a later point in life, career planning is a very important aspect of the process.  Before you actually start applying for positions, it is essential to be certain of the areas you would like to work in.  The worst thing that could happen is not to take any steps in the career planning process, and end up in a job that you are unhappy with, or do not have the proper skill set for.

Career quizzes are often helpful in the career planning process.  These are often a great first step when trying to determine what type of jobs you’d be best suited for.  Many are available online, and address some of the following areas:  identifying your skills and abilities; determining if you prefer working with people, data or things; or summarizing what workplace values are most important to you.  By compiling all of this information, you’ll usually get a general idea of what fields you should be seriously checking out.  The quizzes often list suitable occupations based on your answers.

One avenue that would be best to explore is signing up for career counseling.  There are many free services, mainly ones offered by the government, or at post-secondary institutions, that will get you started on your career planning journey.  Career counselors are trained professionals that will be able to offer you advice and make realistic recommendations on what area you would be best suited to work in.  They will look over your academic training, and often administer aptitude tests to see what careers you should be exploring.

Researching companies that you could picture yourself working for is another great step in the career planning process.  Check out their websites for information, and to see what type of positions they may be hiring for.  When possible, try to set up a meeting with a member of the department you’d like to be a part of, so that you may ask them questions and find out about the day to day aspects of the company on a more intimate level.  Check the newspapers and magazines to see if the company is mentioned at all, and see if the articles are favorable or not.  Although this may seem very simple, it can be a valuable part of your career planning.

If you think you may need to go back to school in order to make a career change, obtaining a catalogue from a local post-secondary institution is a good way to kick start career planning.  Look through what programs are offered, what skills are required to be accepted to programs of interest, and what type of a time commitment you’d be looking at in order to make this change.  See if prior employment or life experience will work in your favor, and give you advanced standing into your selected programs.  People often forget to check into educational requirements for certain careers, and may waste time and energy by skipping this step in the career planning process.

An often underrated aspect of career planning is talking with your friends and family.  Discuss with them in detail what it is they do, and ask them to honestly tell you what they could picture you doing for a living.  Who knows? They may see something that you’ve overlooked, and it could be the missing link to your career planning process.

Career planning is something that everyone is faced with at some point in their lives, and it should not be taken lightly, although you can have some fun with it.  Most important of all is to be honest and realistic with yourself, and make sure you ultimately choose a path that will make you happy and keep you financially secure.

Avoiding Marketing Money Pits

Is your business bombarded by sales and other marketing professionals telling you that the products or services they are offering are in the best interest of effective and cost reducing methods to market your organization?  Finding your way through the maze of offers, opportunities and avoiding potential money pits highlights the importance for all businesses regardless of size to have a strategic marketing plan that is implemented and followed.

It is a tough market place for any small business and information is the key to making wise marketing decisions and for the survival of any business or organization. The relevance of a strategic marketing plan can not be under stated.  It is unfortunate but all to common that people under the disguise of professionals in marketing and sales will boast their products and services as the most effective and cost reducing methods to market your business. Additionally, by writing articles or giving lectures for example, they attempt to give their claims a form of legitimacy.  Beware of people making extraordinary claims, a true professional wants to sell you their product or service but also retains the integrity to learn your business and knows when the product or service is not a good fit.  The benefit for this type of sales or marketing professional is your loyalty and trust in future business transactions.

A strategic marketing plan helps a business to avoid potential money pits that waste valuable marketing dollars in expenditures that may appear to cost less but have minimal or no measurable results.  Simply because something may cost less and other businesses are participating does not make it a solid marketing decision for your organization and certainly does not guarantee successful results.  Regardless of the ticket price if it does not produce measurable results and drive business to your establishment it is a money pit.

There are many good examples on the internet of people under the disguise of professionals boasting their products or services as sound marketing advice.  One of these claims is that a business could inexpensively build brand recognition through the purchase of low cost promotional items with the organizations name or logo embossed on them; items such as pens, tablets, calendars, magnets, and much more.  The problem is that this technique offers minimal to no measurable success in brand building, but more importantly does nothing to draw new customers into the business.

In terms of simple math, if an advertising business were to spend the same money that would be spent on embossed promotional items in traditional media channels such as print, radio, or television for example with an expected 2% rate of return and a minimal exposure of 12,000 individuals gives the advertising business the opportunity for 240 customers for that expenditure.  If only 30% of the 2% actually make a purchase that provides the business with 72 new transactions.  A business can multiply its average transaction price by 72 to see the real potential income from this one marketing expenditure.  Another benefit is brand awareness that would be gained through the advertisement and the opportunity to build customers for life.  Furthermore, to entice repeat business and brand loyalty the organization can offer its customers coupons. This method promotes customer appreciation and can be a low cost marketing method.

Moreover, with any marketing expenditure a business should always perform a cost benefit analysis in correlation with its strategic marketing plan.  Simply, if it does not offer measurable results, drive new business, and build brand awareness it is a money pit.

Free Advertising Among The People You Know

Yes you can do it without being loathsome

Parties are times of celebration. They can also be a fun opportunity to network with people you don’t often get to meet or be with.

This is the season for weddings, graduations, college reunions and family reunions. At these events, everyone knows why you are there. Take advantage of that connection.

They know you in connection to the bridal couple at a wedding reception, the new graduate at the graduation party, your class year at the college reunion, or who is your mother/father, son/daughter at the family reunion. But have you laid the foundation so well and so broad that they all know what you do, what business you are in, and who your market is?

Often we don’t see these people enough to keep up. So celebrations are a great relaxing time to get the word out in a low key way and have fun at the same time. And if networking is not usually your cup of tea, this is a safe environment to practice.

Obviously, you don’t want to be known as the MLM person cruising the room to recruit everyone within three feet. But, you do want them to know what you do and to become a great referral source for your business when they meet someone who is an ideal prospect for your business. They can’t help you if they don’t know what you do. Here are a few basic guidelines I suggest when you talk about work at social occasions.

Don’t ask for names – rather leave the door open for you to followup with a phone call.

  • Don’t sell – you don’t want to become persona non-grata.
  • Don’t book sales appointments or bring out your datebook – followup with a phone call to do that during business hours.
  • Don’t hog the conversation – If you find yourself engrossed with one person more than 30 minutes, you need to close the conversation and move on. Your listener did not come to the party to hear a sales pitch by you.
  • Don’t corner anyone – As tempting as it might be to try to hook an ideal client, strategic partner or person of influence. Don’t do it. You’ll burn too many bridges.
  • Do be specific about who your ideal prospect is, the person, title, company size, industry, niche, etc. – This makes it easy for your listener to relax knowing you are not targeting him.
  • Do clarify what problem you solve – This will engage your listener in the benefits of your product/service.
  • Do brag on one or two recent successes, opportunities, or achievements – At celebration events, everyone is in high spirits, so good news will be well received.
  • Do move about the gathering and meet lots of people – if they don’t know who you are, they won’t be able to tell their friends about you.

When they remember you after the party, you want them to still like you and enjoy your company. To be memorable, it is important that you spend more time asking about them than talking about you. It’s that easy to get free advertising among people you know at all the festivities this spring.

Don’t Stop Short of The Gold

In Napoleon Hill’s classic Think and Grow Rich, he tells a true story of a man named R. U. Darby and his uncle who were hit by the “gold fever” during the gold rush.

After having their first car of ore shipped to a smelter, they discovered they had hit one of the richest bodies of gold in Colorado.  Excitedly, they continued digging, but the ore vein disappeared.

They kept digging in the hopes of finding the vein again, but when they didn’t get the results they were hoping for, they packed it in and sold off their machinery.

The man who bought the machinery realized random digging was not the best way to find the vein.  He called in a mining engineer and had him make some calculations.

What contributed to the failure of Darby and his uncle was their lack of knowledge about “fault lines” and their neglect to consider alternatives.  With his expert knowledge, the engineer was able to predict that the vein of gold could be found three feet from where the Darby’s quit digging, and that’s exactly where it was.

Millions of dollars worth of gold were pulled from the mine by the man who decided to not accept easy defeat, and to bring in someone else who had specialized knowledge he didn’t.

The lesson here is that success is often just beyond what seems to be your greatest obstacle.  Welcome failure and use it as a measuring stick.  When you’re defeated, look for the lesson.  What do you need to change in your approach, your mindset, your environment?

Using a modern day example, I’ve been working with a personal trainer for several months.  During our first few sessions, she was asking me to do what I thought was completely unrealistic.

I was pushing mediocre weights and because I’m a small build, I thought “small results” were the best I could expect to create.  When she asked me to lift 50 pounds doing calf raises, I grunted and groaned and told her it wasn’t possible.  After four reps I wanted to stop and she said, “If you can do four, you can do six … two more!”

With the leg press, my first week she had me up to 100 pounds.  I thought I was going to pop all the veins in my head and asked her if she went to sadistic school.

She eventually stopped telling me what weight she was setting the machines at and continued to increase the weights and the reps. I didn’t have a clue and said to her after two weeks, “Ha! 50 pound calf raises are a piece of cake, let’s up that weight.”

She then said to me, “Laurie, you’ve been lifting 80 pounds for the last two sessions.”

She also had me leg pressing 180 pounds in the third week without my knowing.

By the fourth week I had doubled my calf raise weight to 100 pounds and leg press to 200.  She had done the same with my upper body exercises and I was lifting weights I never would have allowed myself to attempt.

I would have allowed temporary defeat and a limited mindset keep me at the level I had set for myself.  She thought bigger and taught me techniques that allowed me to push harder, lift heavier and grow stronger.

I translated this lesson across to my business thinking and ask that you consider it as well.

The only limits are those you create in your mind.  Defeat is merely a produced result.  Measure the result, change your approach and continue in your efforts.
